What Goes Wrong with Used PC Hardware

Most second-hand faults are invisible until the hardware is put under load.

  • Graphics cards worn by mining. An ex-mining GPU has usually run flat out for months. Fans and thermal pads wear first.
  • Dried thermal paste and tired fans. The PC works at the seller’s desk for two minutes, then overheats in its first game at home.
  • Drives near the end of their life. A hard drive with bad sectors or a heavily worn SSD still boots, until it does not.
  • Cheap or ageing power supplies. The one part sellers rarely mention, and the one that can damage everything else.
  • Parts that do not match the listing. Less memory than advertised, or a slower graphics card with a similar name.
  • Software left behind. An unactivated copy of Windows, the previous owner’s accounts, or worse.

Signs a Used PC or Graphics Card Has Problems

  • Coloured dots, lines or flicker appear once a game has been running for a while.
  • The graphics card climbs past 85°C within minutes.
  • A fan rattles, grinds or does not spin.
  • The PC restarts on its own under load.
  • Windows shows less memory or a different graphics card than the advert promised.
  • The seller will not let you see it running a game.

How to Check a Used PC Before You Pay

Six checks you can do at a meet-up, in about fifteen minutes.

  1. See it start from cold. Never buy a PC you have not watched boot.
  2. Confirm the specs. Open Task Manager and check the processor, memory, drive and graphics card under Performance.
  3. Run it hard for ten minutes. A game or a free benchmark shows faults that the desktop never will.
  4. Listen. Clicking drives and grinding fans are easy to hear in a quiet room.
  5. Ask about the power supply. A known brand is a good sign. No label at all is a bad one.
  6. Ask for a receipt. Proof of purchase tells you the real age and whether any warranty is left.

What not to do: do not judge a PC on a few seconds at the desktop. Most faults in used hardware only show after several minutes under load.

Used Hardware Testing Costs

We confirm the price before starting, and tell you plainly what we find.

ServicePriceUsual turnaround
Graphics card stress test and mining-wear checkFrom $601–3 days
Full health check on a used PCQuote on request1–3 days
Clean, new thermal paste and fan serviceFrom $40Often same day
Clean Windows 11 install on a second-hand PCFrom $50Often same day

A second-hand PC should always get a clean Windows install, because you cannot know what the previous owner left on it. If the test finds a fault we can fix, such as a worn fan or dried paste, we quote for that too.

Buying Used Without the Gamble

The risk in used hardware is not the age. It is not knowing its condition.

A private sale gives you a low price and no comeback. A tested refurbished PC costs a little more and removes the guesswork: it has already been stress-tested, cleaned and re-pasted, and it comes with a warranty. Our article on how we test every refurbished PC lists exactly what is checked.

If you would rather skip the meet-up altogether, you can try a refurbished gaming PC or office PC in our shop before you pay. Our second hand PC page explains the difference between refurbished and simply used.

Why Jalan Besar Buyers Get Hardware Checked Here

An independent test costs far less than a bad purchase.

We test used hardware daily

Every desktop we sell has been through the same checks, so we know where second-hand parts hide their faults.

Tested under load

The card or PC is run hard for long enough to expose heat and stability problems.

A plain verdict

You are told whether to keep it, return it, or fix it, with the cost of the fix.

Faults fixed on the spot

Worn fans and dried paste can be put right at the same visit, so a marginal card becomes a good one.

Jalan Besar Computer Repair FAQ

Is there a computer repair shop near Jalan Besar?

Yes. Budget PC Singapore is at Bugis Street #CFL A08, about ten minutes’ walk from Jalan Besar MRT. The shop is open daily from 11am to 8pm.

How much does it cost to test a used graphics card?

Graphics card testing starts from $60 and includes a stress test and a check for signs of heavy mining use. We confirm the price before starting.

How can I tell if a graphics card was used for mining?

You usually cannot tell from the outside. Worn or noisy fans, dried thermal pads and high temperatures under load are the signs. A stress test shows whether the card is still healthy, which matters more than its history.

Is it safe to buy a used gaming PC?

Yes, if it has been tested under load and comes with some form of warranty. Private sales carry more risk because faults often appear only after several minutes of use.

What should I test before buying a used PC?

Watch it start from cold, confirm the specs in Task Manager, run a game or benchmark for at least ten minutes, and listen for noisy fans or a clicking drive.

Can you fix a used graphics card that runs hot?

Often, yes. Cleaning, new thermal paste and a fan replacement bring most hot-running cards back to normal temperatures. Graphics card repair starts from $60.

Should I reinstall Windows on a second-hand PC?

Yes, always. A clean install removes anything the previous owner left behind and gives you a system you can trust. It starts from $50.

Do you sell tested used PCs?

Yes. We sell refurbished desktops that have been stress-tested, cleaned and re-pasted, with a warranty. You can try the exact machine in the shop before you pay.
