Most slow PCs do not need replacing. An SSD, more RAM or a clean Windows install fixes the majority of them for a fraction of the price of a new machine, and we will tell you if yours is one of the exceptions. This page explains why PCs slow down and how to decide between an upgrade and a replacement.

Why PCs Get Slow
Six causes account for nearly every slow desktop we see.
- It still runs on a hard drive. The single biggest cause. A mechanical drive is many times slower than an SSD at the small reads Windows does constantly.
- Not enough RAM. With 8GB or less, a browser with a dozen tabs and a video call will fill the memory and the PC starts swapping to disk.
- Too many programs start with Windows. Each one adds to startup time and sits in memory all day.
- The drive is nearly full. Windows needs free space to work, and slows sharply when there is almost none left.
- Malware or unwanted software. Background programs using the processor and network without you knowing.
- Heat. A dusty PC slows itself down to stay cool. This is thermal throttling.
Signs an Upgrade Will Help
- Startup takes more than a minute or two.
- Task Manager shows the disk at 100% while the PC is doing very little.
- Memory use sits above 85% during normal work.
- The PC freezes for a few seconds when you switch between programs or tabs.
- Programs take a long time to open, but run acceptably once they are loaded.
- The processor is recent enough that it is not the weak point.
Slow PC: Free Fixes to Try First
Worth ten minutes of your time before you spend anything.
- Trim the startup list. Open Task Manager, go to Startup apps and disable anything you do not need the moment Windows loads.
- Free up disk space. Empty the recycle bin and downloads folder, and aim to keep about a fifth of the drive free.
- Restart properly. Choose Restart, not Shut down. It clears more than a shutdown does and lets pending updates finish.
- Run a full virus scan. The built-in Windows Security scan is enough to catch common infections.
- Look at Task Manager. Check the Performance tab while the PC feels slow. Whichever of disk, memory or processor is pinned at 100% is your bottleneck.
What not to do: avoid PC cleaner and speed booster programs. Most do little, and some are the unwanted software that slowed the PC down in the first place.
Upgrade and Slow PC Repair Costs
Diagnosis is free when you proceed with the repair, and we confirm the exact price before any work.
| Service | Price | Usual turnaround |
| SSD upgrade, with your old drive cloned across | From $39 + parts | Often same day |
| RAM upgrade | From $39 + parts | Often same day |
| Clean Windows 11 install with drivers | From $50 | Often same day |
| Internal clean and thermal paste renewal | From $40 | Often same day |
The price of the part depends on the size you choose, and we quote it before starting. With disk cloning your programs, files and settings move to the new drive as they are, so nothing needs setting up again. Still deciding between drive types? Read our SSD vs HDD guide.
Upgrade or Replace?
An upgrade is not always the right answer, and we will say so when it is not.
- Upgrade when the PC is slow to start and slow to open programs, but the processor is still reasonable. This covers most PCs under about eight years old.
- Replace when the repair or upgrade would cost more than about half the price of a comparable tested desktop.
- Replace when the PC cannot run Windows 11. Windows 10 stopped receiving free security updates in October 2025, and no upgrade changes what the processor supports.
- Replace when you need it for current games and the processor, motherboard and graphics card are all a generation or more behind.
If replacing makes more sense, tested refurbished office PCs start from $550 and gaming PCs from $750, and you can trade in the old machine to bring the price down.
Why Bedok Customers Upgrade with Us
The aim is a PC that feels new again, for the least money.
Checked before anything is sold
We look at what is actually holding the PC back, so you only pay for the upgrade that will make a difference.
Nothing to set up again
Your old drive is cloned to the new SSD, so Windows, programs and files are exactly where you left them.
Often back the same day
SSD and RAM upgrades are usually finished the day you drop the PC off.
Told when it is not worth it
If the PC is too old for an upgrade to help, we say so before you spend anything, and a trade-in can offset a replacement.

Labour for an SSD or RAM upgrade starts from $39, plus the price of the part, which depends on the capacity you choose. We quote the total before starting.
Sudden slowness is usually a failing drive, malware, overheating or a Windows update running in the background. Slowness that builds up over years is usually an old hard drive and too little RAM.
Yes, if it still runs on a hard drive. Startup typically drops from minutes to well under a minute, and programs open much faster. It will not raise frame rates in games much, because those depend on the graphics card.
Yes. We clone the old drive so Windows, programs, files and settings carry over as they are. If the old drive is failing or Windows is unstable, a clean install is safer and we will recommend that instead.
16GB suits most home, study and gaming use today. 8GB is workable for light browsing and documents, and 32GB helps with video editing and heavy multitasking.
For most slow PCs, an SSD or RAM upgrade from $39 plus parts is far cheaper and fixes the problem. If the repair would cost more than about half the price of a comparable tested desktop, we will recommend a refurbished PC instead.
WhatsApp us on 9777 7509 with your address and the fault and we can arrange a pickup. Dropping the PC at Parkway Parade yourself is usually the fastest way to get a diagnosis.
