Signs Your PC Needs Repair
Find your symptom below. Each one links to a fuller guide.
- It will not turn on, or powers on to a black screen. Usually the power supply, memory or graphics card. Technicians call the black-screen version a failed POST.
- It shuts down or restarts by itself. Most often heat. See our guide to overheating PCs and cleaning.
- Blue screens keep coming back. A driver, a bad update or failing hardware. See Windows problems and blue screen fixes.
- Games crash or show strange colours and lines. The graphics card, its drivers or the power supply. See gaming PC and graphics card repair.
- Startup takes minutes and everything lags. An old hard drive or too little memory. See slow PC fixes and upgrades.
- A drive is clicking, or files have gone missing. Stop using the PC. See data recovery.
What to Check First
- Power. Confirm the wall socket works, the cable is pushed in at both ends, and the switch on the back of the power supply is on.
- Display. Make sure the monitor is on the right input and its cable is plugged into the graphics card, not the motherboard.
- Recent changes. A new part, a moved PC or a fresh update just before the fault is the best clue there is. Tell us about it.
If the PC is completely dead, our PC won’t turn on troubleshooting guide walks through the full sequence. If none of it helps, bring the PC in and we will test it with known-good parts.
