Why Desktop PCs Overheat

Almost every overheating PC we open has one of these six causes.

  • Dust in the heatsink and fans. A layer of dust works like a blanket. Air cannot reach the metal fins, so heat stays in the chip.
  • Dried-out thermal paste. The thermal paste between the processor and its cooler hardens after a few years and stops passing heat across.
  • A fan that has stopped. Case fans and cooler fans wear out. One dead fan can raise temperatures across the whole PC.
  • Blocked airflow. A PC pushed against a wall, kept in a closed cabinet or sitting on carpet cannot pull in cool air.
  • A failing liquid cooler. All-in-one coolers have a pump that eventually wears out, and a dead pump overheats a processor within minutes.
  • A cooler that is too small. Stock coolers struggle with faster processors, especially in a warm room without air-conditioning.

Signs Your PC Is Running Too Hot

  • Fans run at full speed during light work such as browsing or video calls.
  • Games start smoothly and then the frame rate drops after a few minutes. This is thermal throttling.
  • The PC restarts or switches off on its own, usually in the middle of something demanding.
  • The top or back of the case is hot to the touch.
  • There is a smell of hot dust when the PC has been on for a while.
  • A monitoring tool shows the processor sitting above 90°C under load.

Overheating PC: What to Try at Home First

Four safe checks that sometimes solve it, and tell us a lot if they do not.

  1. Give the PC room. Move it out of any closed cabinet and leave about a hand’s width of space behind and beside it.
  2. Clean the filters. With the PC switched off and unplugged, remove the dust filters on the front, top and bottom and rinse or brush them clean.
  3. Watch the fans. Take the side panel off and switch on. Every fan should spin. One that twitches, grinds or stays still is your likely culprit.
  4. Check the temperature. A free monitoring tool will show processor and graphics card temperatures. Note the numbers at idle and during a game, and send them to us.

What not to do: do not point a household vacuum cleaner at the components, because it builds up static. Do not remove the processor cooler unless you have fresh thermal paste ready to reapply, because the old paste will not seal again.

Overheating and Cleaning Costs

Diagnosis is free when you proceed with the repair, and we confirm the exact price before any work.

ServicePriceUsual turnaround
Internal clean, dust-out and thermal paste renewalFrom $40Often same day
Fan replacementQuoted with your diagnosisSame day if the fan is in stock
No power or no boot after a shutdownFrom $501–3 days
SSD or RAM upgrade while it is openFrom $39 + partsOften same day

Most cleaning jobs from Katong are dropped off before lunch and collected the same evening. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you before you commit and the PC is normally ready within one to three days.

When an Overheating PC Needs a Technician

Keep using an overheating PC and a $40 clean can turn into a dead component.

  • It shuts down under load more than once. The PC is protecting itself, and each shutdown risks corrupting files.
  • A fan is silent, grinding or rattling. Running without it will cook whatever it was cooling.
  • Temperatures stay high after you have cleaned the filters. The problem is inside the cooler or the paste.
  • A liquid cooler is gurgling or its tubes are cold while the processor is hot. The pump has probably failed.
  • You smell burning. Switch off at the wall and do not turn it back on.

Why Katong Customers Use Us for PC Cleaning

A proper clean is more than a blast of air through the vents.

Opened up and cleaned properly

We clear the heatsinks and fans from the inside and renew the thermal paste. Blowing air in from outside never reaches where the heat builds up.

Tested before you collect

The PC is run under load after the clean, so you leave knowing the temperatures have come down.

Usually done the same day

Cleaning and paste renewal need no parts ordered, so most are ready the day you drop off.

Price agreed first

If we find a dead fan or a failing cooler, you hear the cost before anything is replaced. No fix means no fee on repairs.

Katong Computer Repair FAQ

Is there a computer repair shop near Katong?

Yes. Budget PC Singapore repairs desktop computers at Parkway Parade #B1-45, 80 Marine Parade Road. It is two MRT stops from Katong Park and one stop from Tanjong Katong on the Thomson-East Coast Line.

How much does PC cleaning cost near Katong?

An internal clean with dust-out and thermal paste renewal starts from $40. Diagnosis is free when you proceed with the repair, and we confirm the exact price before any work.

How hot is too hot for a PC?

Most processors are built to reach around 95 to 100°C before they slow down or shut off, but sitting above 90°C under load for long periods means the cooling needs attention. At idle, a healthy desktop usually sits between about 35 and 50°C.

How often should a desktop PC be cleaned in Singapore?

A yearly internal clean suits most desktops. Make it every six months if the PC sits on the floor, near an open window, or in a home with pets. Thermal paste usually needs renewing every few years.

Is overheating dangerous for my PC?

Modern processors and graphics cards slow themselves down or switch off before heat causes immediate damage. Running hot for long periods still shortens component life and causes crashes, so it is worth fixing early.

Can I clean my PC myself?

You can clean the dust filters and blow out loose dust with the PC unplugged. Leave cooler removal and thermal paste to a technician unless you have done it before.

Can you collect my PC from Katong?

WhatsApp us on 9777 7509 with your address and the fault, and we can arrange a pickup. Most customers from Katong drive over and park at Parkway Parade, which is the quickest way to get a diagnosis.

How long will my repair take if I drop off from Katong?

Cleaning, thermal paste renewal, SSD or RAM upgrades and Windows reinstalls are often done the same day. Other repairs usually take 1–3 days, and we confirm the timing with your quote.
