PC Repair Glossary
Terms your technician might mention — explained so you understand exactly what’s being fixed and why.
Thermal Paste
The compound between your CPU and cooler that transfers heat — it dries out over time and causes overheating.
Thermal Throttling
A CPU or GPU slowing itself down to avoid overheating. The reason a PC starts fast and turns sluggish after a few minutes.
PSU (Power Supply Unit)
Converts wall power for your components. A failing PSU causes random shutdowns — a cheap one can kill your whole PC.
POST (Power-On Self-Test)
The hardware check a PC runs before Windows loads. Fans spinning with a black screen usually means POST has failed.
BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)
Windows stopping itself after a serious fault. The stop code on the screen points to the cause.
Disk Cloning
Copying a whole drive, Windows and files included, onto a new SSD so the PC starts up exactly as before.
Ex-Mining GPU
A used graphics card that was run for crypto mining — what wears out, and how to test one before you pay.
