What Windows 11 Needs from a PC
Five requirements, and most PCs built since about 2018 meet all of them.
- A supported processor. Broadly, Intel 8th generation or newer, or AMD Ryzen 2000 series or newer. This is the one requirement no setting can change.
- TPM 2.0. A security chip, usually built into the processor. On many PCs it is present but switched off.
- Secure Boot. The PC must start in the modern UEFI mode, with Secure Boot available.
- 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage. The official minimum. In practice 8GB of RAM and an SSD are what make Windows 11 pleasant to use.
- A drive in the modern layout. Older installs use a disk layout that Secure Boot cannot start from. It can be converted.
Why a PC Is Told It Cannot Run Windows 11
- TPM is turned off. The most common reason, and a settings change fixes it.
- The PC starts in legacy mode. Secure Boot is unavailable until the start-up mode and the disk layout are changed.
- The system drive is nearly full. The upgrade needs working space to install.
- Too little memory. An older office PC with 4GB will install Windows 11 and then crawl.
- The processor is too old. The only one of these that an upgrade service cannot fix.
Windows 11 Upgrade: Checks You Can Run Yourself
Ten minutes will tell you which of the cases above applies.
- Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check. The free app names the exact requirement your PC fails.
- Look up your processor. Task Manager shows the model under Performance. Send it to us and we will tell you if it is supported.
- Check free space. Aim for at least 64GB free on the system drive before starting.
- Back up first. Copy documents and photos to an external drive before any upgrade, even one that promises to keep them.
- List the software you depend on. Very old accounting or design programs are worth checking for Windows 11 support before you move.
What not to do: on a PC you rely on, do not use unofficial tricks to force Windows 11 onto an unsupported processor. It may install, but Microsoft does not promise such a PC will keep receiving updates.

If the PC still runs on a hard drive, fitting an SSD during the upgrade is the best value change you can make. Windows 11 on a hard drive is slow enough that many people assume the upgrade went wrong.
When the PC Cannot Be Upgraded
If the processor is not supported, these are the realistic choices.
- Replace the PC. Usually the sensible answer. A tested refurbished office PC that runs Windows 11 starts from $550.
- Trade the old one in. An old desktop still has some value against a replacement. See our trade-in page.
- Keep it for offline jobs. A Windows 10 PC that never goes online, such as one driving a printer or an old program, carries far less risk.
- Replace the processor and motherboard. Possible, but on an old machine it rarely costs less than a refurbished PC.
Whichever you choose, your files and settings can be moved across, so a new PC does not mean starting again.

It still works, but it stopped receiving free security updates in October 2025, so the risk grows the longer the PC stays online. Banking and work email are the first things to move to a supported PC.
Often the same day. A PC with a lot of files to copy, or one that needs a new drive fitted first, can take a day longer.
Upgrade it if the processor is supported, because the cost is small. If the processor is too old for Windows 11, replacing the PC is usually better value than replacing its parts.
