Bras Basah sits between the university campus, the art schools and the National Library, so the desktops around here are asked to do a lot: 3D work, video editing, AI coursework, and gaming after hours. When the graphics card is what is holding a PC back, our shop at Bugis Street #CFL A08 is about nine minutes away on foot.
A new graphics card is the biggest performance jump most desktops can get, but only if the rest of the PC can support it. This page covers what has to match, how to tell whether the card is really your weak point, and what an upgrade costs.

What Has to Match Before a Graphics Card Upgrade
Five things decide whether a new card will work in your PC.
- Power supply. The card’s power draw has to fit within what the PSU can deliver, with the right connectors. As a guide, an RTX 4060 wants around 550W and an RTX 4070 around 650W, rising to 850W for an RTX 5080.
- Processor. An old processor cannot feed a fast card quickly enough, which is called a bottleneck. The card sits idle while the processor struggles.
- Space in the case. Modern cards are long and thick. The case needs the length, and the motherboard needs free slots beside the card.
- Memory on the card. VRAM matters more than raw speed for 3D scenes, large video timelines and AI tools.
- Your monitor. A faster card shows little on a basic 60Hz screen. The gain appears at high refresh rates or at 1440p and above.
Signs the Graphics Card Is Your Weak Point
- In games, the graphics card sits near 100% use while the processor has room to spare.
- Dropping the resolution gives a big jump in FPS.
- Textures load late or the game stutters when the card’s memory fills up.
- Creative software reports that it has run out of graphics memory.
- An AI tool refuses to load a model because the card does not have enough VRAM.
- New games list your card below their minimum requirement.
Before You Buy a Graphics Card
Ten minutes of checking saves a return trip to the shop.
- Read the power supply label. Note the brand, model and wattage printed on its side.
- Measure the case. Check the space from the rear slots to the front of the case against the card’s listed length.
- Find your processor model. Task Manager shows it under Performance. Send it to us and we will tell you if it will hold a new card back.
- Decide what you are aiming for. A resolution and frame rate target narrows the choice. Our RTX GPU comparison ranks the cards by raw power.
- Buying used? Have the card tested first. See used PC and graphics card testing.
What not to do: do not use adapter cables to squeeze more power out of a supply that was not built for the card. An overloaded power supply can fail and take other parts with it.
Graphics Card Upgrade Costs
We confirm the total before starting, including any other part the upgrade needs.
| Service | Price | Usual turnaround |
| Graphics card upgrade: compatibility check, install and test | Quote on request | Often same day |
| Power supply replacement, if the new card needs it | Quoted with the upgrade | Same day if the part is in stock |
| Testing a used graphics card before you fit it | From $60 | 1โ3 days |
| Internal clean and thermal paste renewal while it is open | From $40 | Often same day |
The install itself is quick. Most of the value is in the check beforehand, which stops you paying for a card your PC cannot run properly.
When a Graphics Card Upgrade Is the Wrong Move
Sometimes the card is not the part to spend on.
- The processor is several generations old. It will bottleneck any modern card, and the money is half wasted.
- The power supply is unbranded or too small. It has to be replaced first, which changes the sums.
- It is a slim office desktop. Many use small cases and non-standard power supplies that only take low-power cards.
- The monitor is the limit. A basic 60Hz screen cannot show what the new card produces.
- Everything is old. When the processor, motherboard and power supply would all need changing, a complete machine is the better buy.
In that last case, a tested refurbished gaming PC usually costs less than the upgrades would, and you can trade in the old one.

It depends on the card and on whether the power supply also needs replacing, so upgrades are quoted on request. We confirm the total before starting.
Usually, if the power supply has enough wattage and the right connectors and the case has the space. An older processor may limit how much of the new card’s speed you actually get.
Only if the current one cannot deliver what the card draws. As a guide, an RTX 4060 wants around 550W and an RTX 4070 around 650W. We check your power supply before recommending anything.
8GB handles 1080p gaming. 12GB or more is more comfortable for 1440p, video editing and 3D work, and AI tools benefit from as much as you can afford.
Yes. We check it against your PC, fit it, install the drivers and test it under load.
Often the same day, once the card is in hand and the power supply is confirmed suitable.
Upgrade the card when the processor and power supply are still good enough to support it. If several other parts would also need replacing, a complete tested gaming PC is usually better value.
