What is a Bottleneck?
A bottleneck is when one component limits the performance of the rest of your PC. In gaming, it’s usually either the CPU or the GPU — whichever one maxes out first sets your FPS.
CPU-limited vs GPU-limited
CPU-limited is common in esports titles like Valorant and CS2 at 1080p, where the game wants hundreds of frames a second. A faster graphics card barely helps here. GPU-limited is normal, and healthy, in AAA games and at 1440p or 4K. There, a stronger GPU directly means more FPS.
How to check yours
Run a game with an overlay such as MSI Afterburner. If GPU usage stays around 95–99%, your graphics card is the limit. If GPU usage sits well below 90% while one or more CPU threads are maxed, your processor is holding it back.
Avoid the classic upgrade mistake
Dropping an RTX 5070 into an old quad-core PC often wastes a large part of the card. Match the GPU tier to your CPU and monitor. Our RTX GPU comparison shows which tier suits 1080p, 1440p and 4K — and we can check your CPU before you buy. If your whole platform is old, a balanced gaming PC build with a matched CPU and GPU is often better value than a GPU-only upgrade.
