Infected PC: What to Do in the First Few Minutes
The aim is to stop it spreading and stop it sending anything out.
- Disconnect from the internet. Pull the network cable or switch off the WiFi. This cuts off whoever is on the other end.
- Stay out of your accounts. Do not log in to banking or email on that PC until it is clean.
- Ignore the phone number. Never call a number shown in a warning, and never let a caller connect to your PC remotely.
- If files are being locked, power off. Hold the power button until it shuts down. Every second it runs, more files are encrypted.
- Change passwords from another device. Start with email and banking, and switch on two-step verification.
- Remember what came just before. The attachment, download or website you opened last helps us identify what it is.

- Use a standard account for daily work. Keep the administrator account for installing software only.
- Back up to two places. An external drive that is unplugged after each backup, plus cloud storage. Ransomware cannot encrypt a drive that is not connected.
- Treat attachments with suspicion. Invoices and delivery notices you were not expecting are the most common bait.
- Avoid cracked software. Free copies of paid programs are one of the most reliable ways to get infected.
