A dead PC is rarely a dead PC. In most cases one part has failed and the rest is fine. This page explains what usually fails, how the symptoms narrow it down, and what it costs to put right.

Why a PC Will Not Turn On
Six causes cover nearly every dead desktop that reaches our bench.
- A failed power supply. The most common cause by far. The PSU wears out with age and heat, and when it goes nothing else gets power.
- A motherboard fault. Often follows a power surge, a liquid spill or years of heat.
- A loose power connector. The large motherboard plug or the processor power cable can work free when a PC is moved.
- A short circuit. A stray screw or a pinched cable makes the power supply shut off the instant it starts, to protect itself.
- The power button itself. The switch or its thin cable to the motherboard fails, so pressing it does nothing.
- Memory or graphics card trouble. The PC gets power but cannot complete its start-up check, so the screen stays black.
What the Symptoms Tell Us
- No lights, no fans, nothing. Power supply, power cable or wall socket.
- Fans twitch for a second, then stop. A short circuit, or a power supply protecting itself.
- Fans spin but the screen is black. Memory, graphics card or motherboard. This is a failed POST, and it has its own guide: PCs that turn on with no display.
- It turns on and off in a loop. Power supply or motherboard.
- A pop or a burning smell, then nothing. The power supply has failed. Do not try again.
- It died during a storm or a power trip. Power supply first, motherboard second.
PC Won’t Turn On: Quick Checks Before You Bring It In
Four things that cost nothing and rule out the simplest causes.
- Try another socket and another power cable. A kettle lead from a monitor will do for the test.
- Check the switch on the back. The power supply has its own rocker switch, and it is easy to knock off.
- Drain and retry. Unplug the PC, hold the power button for fifteen seconds, plug it back in and try again.
- Rule out the monitor. Confirm the screen is on, set to the right input, and cabled to the graphics card.
Our PC won’t turn on troubleshooting guide walks through the full sequence step by step if you want to go further.
What not to do: never open the power supply’s own casing. It holds a dangerous charge long after it is unplugged.
No-Power Repair Costs
Diagnosis is free when you proceed with the repair, and we confirm the exact price before any work.
| Service | Price | Usual turnaround |
| No power or no boot: diagnosis and repair | From $50 | 1โ3 days |
| Power supply replacement | Quoted with your diagnosis | Same day if the part is in stock |
| Motherboard replacement | Quoted with your diagnosis | Depends on the part |
| Copying files off a PC that cannot be revived | Quote after diagnosis. No recovery, no fee | Depends on the drive’s condition |
The labour is the small part of a no-power repair. The real question is which part has failed, and we answer it by testing with known-good parts, so you are never asked to buy a power supply only to find the motherboard was the problem.
When to Stop Trying and Bring It In
Repeated attempts to start a faulty PC can turn one failed part into two.
- You heard a pop or smelled burning. Unplug it at the wall and leave it off.
- It cuts out within a second, every time. Something is shorting, and each attempt stresses the board.
- Liquid went anywhere near it. Do not power it on to see if it still works.
- You need the files today. We can take the drive out and copy your files even if the PC itself is beyond saving.
- It failed straight after a power trip. Surges often damage more than one part.
Why Bencoolen Customers Bring Dead PCs to Us
Finding the failed part is the whole job.
Tested with known-good parts
We swap in working parts to prove which one has failed, so the diagnosis is not a guess.
Only the failed part is replaced
A dead power supply does not mean a new PC. You pay for the part that broke and nothing more.
Your files stay safe
The drive is rarely what fails. If the PC cannot be saved, we can still copy your files off it.
Told when it is not worth it
If the repair comes close to the price of a tested refurbished desktop, we say so before you spend anything.
