Laptop Repair Glossary
The terms a technician uses when your laptop is on the counter, explained so you know what is being fixed and why.
Battery Cycle Count
How many full charges a laptop battery has been through. The number that tells you how worn it is.
Swollen Battery
A battery that has puffed up with gas. It lifts the trackpad, warps the case and is a fire risk.
DC Jack (Charging Port)
The socket the charger plugs into. A loose one is the usual reason a laptop charges only at an angle.
USB-C Power Delivery
The standard that lets a USB-C port charge a laptop, and the reason a phone charger will not do the job.
Chip-Level Repair
Fixing the one failed component on a motherboard instead of replacing the whole board.
Liquid Damage
What a spill does inside a laptop, why it keeps getting worse after it dries, and what to do in the first hour.
Laptop Hinge
The joint that holds the screen up. A stiff or cracked hinge will break the lid and the screen if it is left.
Laptop Screen Panel
The display itself: IPS, OLED, touch or not, and why the right replacement depends on the exact model.
