What the Fault Is Telling You
Which keys fail, and how, points to the cause.
- One or two keys are dead or need a hard press. Dirt under the key or a worn switch.
- A whole row or block of keys has stopped. The keyboard’s cable or connector, or liquid on the circuit sheet inside.
- Keys type by themselves or repeat. Nearly always liquid. Something has bridged the contacts.
- Keys feel sticky. Sugar from a drink has dried underneath.
- The trackpad is hard to click or sits raised. Often a swollen battery pushing up from below. Stop charging the laptop.
- The pointer jumps or drifts. A failing trackpad, moisture, or a poor quality charger.
- The keyboard works before Windows loads but not after. A driver or settings problem, not hardware.
After a Spill: The First Hour
What you do now decides whether it is a keyboard or a motherboard.
- Switch it off at once. Hold the power button until it goes dark. Do not save, do not shut down normally.
- Unplug the charger and anything else connected.
- Turn it upside down, open like a tent. This drains liquid away from the board under the keys.
- Bring it in the same day. A board cleaned within hours is far more likely to survive.
What not to do: do not turn it on to check. Do not use a hairdryer. Rice does not help. The residue left behind keeps corroding the board after it looks dry. See liquid damage for why.
Keyboard or Trackpad Not Working: Quick Checks
Four things that cost nothing. Skip these if liquid was involved.
- Plug in a USB keyboard or mouse. If those work, the laptop is fine and the fault is the built-in part.
- Restart and try the keys before Windows loads. If they work there, the fault is software.
- Check the function keys. Many laptops have a key that switches the trackpad off, and a Num Lock that changes what keys type.
- Brush out the keys. A soft brush along the gaps clears crumbs. Do not prise keycaps off a thin laptop. The clips break.

Why the price varies so much: on some laptops the keyboard lifts out with a few screws. On many thin models it is riveted into the top cover, so the whole top section is replaced. Backlit keyboards and less common layouts also cost more.
After a spill the keyboard is often the cheap part. The real question is whether liquid reached the motherboard, which is why spill repairs are quoted only after the laptop has been opened.
When to Stop Using It and Bring It In
These get more expensive with every day of use.
- Any liquid went in, even if it still works. Laptops often fail a week after a spill, once corrosion has set in.
- The trackpad is lifting. The battery underneath is swelling. Stop charging it.
- Keys are typing by themselves. A stuck key can stop the laptop starting, or lock you out with wrong passwords.
- The keyboard area is hot. Something underneath is shorting.
