What the Screen Is Telling You
The pattern on the display points to the part that has failed.
- A visible crack, or black patches like spilled ink. The screen panel is broken and needs replacing.
- Thin coloured lines that never move. Usually the panel, sometimes its connector.
- Flicker or blackouts when you move the lid. The display cable is pinched or worn where it passes through the hinge.
- A very dark picture you can just make out. The backlight has failed. The laptop itself is working.
- A plain white or grey screen. A loose display cable, or a failed panel.
- Touch has stopped responding but the picture is fine. The touch layer has failed. On most touch laptops it is bonded to the panel.
- The same fault shows on an external monitor. This is not the screen. It points to the graphics chip or the motherboard.
Laptop Screen Problems: Quick Checks Before You Bring It In
Four things that cost nothing and narrow it down.
- Plug in an external monitor or TV. If the picture there is perfect, the fault is in the screen or its cable, and your laptop and files are fine.
- Shine a torch at the dark screen. If you can see a faint picture, the backlight has failed, not the whole panel.
- Open and close the lid slowly. If the picture cuts in and out with the angle, the cable is the suspect.
- Restart and watch the first screen. Lines on the maker’s logo, before Windows loads, mean hardware. Lines that appear only inside Windows can be a driver.
What not to do: do not press on a cracked screen or keep flexing the lid to bring the picture back. Both make the damage worse, and cracked glass can cut.
What Decides the Price of a Screen
Two laptops of the same size can need very different parts.
- The panel type. A standard IPS panel costs far less than an OLED one.
- Resolution and refresh rate. A sharp or high-refresh gaming panel costs more than a basic Full HD one.
- Touch or non-touch. Touch screens are bonded units, so the whole assembly is replaced.
- How the panel is fitted. Some lift out after removing a bezel. Others are glued into the lid and take longer.
- The model. The connector and mounting points must match exactly, which is why we ask for the model number.
