What is a Laptop Screen Panel?

The laptop screen panel is the display itself: the thin sheet of glass and electronics that makes the picture. When a laptop screen cracks, this is the part that gets replaced.

The main panel types

IPS is the most common today, with good colour and wide viewing angles. TN is an older, cheaper type with washed-out colour from the side, found on budget and older laptops. OLED has no backlight, so blacks are truly black and colours are vivid, but the panel costs considerably more to replace.

Why the replacement must match the model

Two laptops with the same screen size can use completely different panels. A replacement has to match on size, resolution, refresh rate, the connector and its number of pins, how the panel mounts in the lid, and whether it is touch or non-touch. This is why a screen is quoted by exact model and not by size.

Touchscreens and bonded displays

On touch laptops and MacBooks, the glass, the touch layer and the panel are bonded into one unit. A crack in the glass means replacing the whole assembly, which costs more than a plain panel.

Is it the panel, or something else?

Cracks, ink-like black patches and fixed coloured lines mean the panel is damaged. A screen that flickers when the lid moves usually points to the display cable or the hinge area. A very dim picture you can just make out under a torch is a backlight fault. If an external monitor shows the same problem, the fault is the graphics chip, not the screen.
