A gaming laptop squeezes a desktop-class processor and graphics chip into a case a few centimetres thick. It only works because the cooling system is running flat out, and in a Singapore room without air conditioning it starts the day already warm. Two or three years of dust is usually enough to tip it over.
This page explains why gaming laptops overheat, how to tell heat from a hardware fault, and how the repair is priced. The same service applies to any laptop that runs hot.

Why a Gaming Laptop Overheats
Four causes cover nearly every hot laptop that reaches the counter.
- Dust in the cooling fins. The fans pull air through a thin metal radiator. Dust and lint build a felt-like mat across it, and the hot air has nowhere to go.
- Dried thermal paste. The thermal paste between the chips and the cooler hardens with heat, and stops passing heat across.
- A worn fan. Bearings wear out. The fan rattles, slows or stops, often on one side only.
- Blocked vents. A laptop used on a bed, a sofa or a lap draws no air from underneath.
What the Symptoms Tell Us
- Smooth for ten minutes, then the frame rate halves. Thermal throttling. The chips are slowing themselves to survive.
- It switches off without warning under load. The laptop hit its safety limit and cut power.
- Fans at full speed while idle. Blocked fins, or a background program working the processor.
- A rattle or grinding noise. A fan bearing is failing.
- The keyboard is too hot to rest your hands on. Heat is not leaving the case.
- Lines, blocks or flashing colours in games. This points to the graphics chip, not just heat. Bring it in.
Overheating Laptop: Quick Checks Before You Bring It In
Four things that cost nothing.
- Use it on a hard, flat surface. Raise the back edge a little so air can reach the intakes underneath.
- Look into the exhaust vents with a torch. A grey mat behind the grille means the fins are blocked.
- Check what is running. Open Task Manager and look for a program holding the processor at a high percentage while you are doing nothing.
- Watch the temperature. A free tool such as HWMonitor shows it. A processor sitting near its limit in games, and falling slowly afterwards, points to cooling.
What not to do: do not blast compressed air into the vents with the fans free to spin. It can push the dust deeper and overspin the fan. A proper clean means opening the laptop.
Overheating and Gaming Laptop Repair Costs
Diagnosis is free, and you get a fixed quote for your model before any work starts.
| Repair | How it is priced | Usual turnaround |
| Internal dust-out and new thermal paste | Quoted by model | Often same day |
| Fan replacement | Quoted by model | Often same day when the fan is in stock |
| Battery replacement | Quoted by model | Often same day when the battery is in stock |
| Graphics or board-level repair | Quoted after diagnosis | Usually a few days |
| SSD or RAM upgrade | Quoted by part and size | Often same day |
Gaming laptops take longer to open than office models, and some use special thermal compounds from the factory, so the price is set by the model. Parts for less common machines may need ordering, and you are told the timing with the quote.
Other Gaming Laptop Faults We Repair
Heat is the usual problem, but not the only one.
- A battery worn out early. A gaming laptop that lives on its charger keeps the battery full and hot. See charging and battery faults.
- A cracked or stiff hinge. Heavy lids put real strain on a laptop hinge, and a failing one will crack the case.
- Graphics faults. The graphics chip is soldered to the board, so a fault needs chip-level repair, not a new card.
- Dead keys or lighting. Keyboards on gaming laptops take heavy use on the same few keys. See keyboard and trackpad repair.
- A cracked or flickering screen. High-refresh panels need an exact match. See laptop screen replacement.
- Slow loading. A larger or faster SSD is usually a simple upgrade. See SSD and RAM upgrades.
If you mostly game at a desk, compare the repair against a tested gaming desktop. A desktop runs cooler, costs less for the same frame rate and is far cheaper to repair. Our PC build calculator prices one in a minute.

Yes. PhoneDoctor at Parkway Parade #B1-45, where Budget PC’s Marine Parade repairs are done, is two MRT stops from Siglap. It is open daily from 11am to 9pm.
Usually thermal throttling. The processor and graphics chip slow themselves down when they get too hot, which happens when the cooling fins are clogged or the thermal paste has dried out.
It depends on the model, because some gaming laptops take much longer to open than others. It is quoted for your laptop after a free diagnosis, before any work starts.
Every one to two years for a laptop that is gamed on regularly, and sooner in a home with pets or an open window. Rising fan noise and falling frame rates are the signs.
It helps a little by feeding more air underneath, but it cannot clear blocked fins or replace dried thermal paste. If the laptop used to run cooler, it needs cleaning.
