Why a Laptop Will Not Charge
Power passes through four things on its way to the battery. Any one can fail.

- The charging port. A round DC jack works loose from years of plugging in, and USB-C ports collect lint and bend their contacts.
- The battery. Every battery wears out. Once its cycle count is high, it holds a fraction of its original charge, or none.
- The charging circuit. A small fault on the motherboard stops power reaching the battery. This usually follows a spill, a surge or a cheap charger, and chip-level repair can often fix it without a new board.
What the Symptoms Tell Us
- It charges only when the plug is held at an angle. A worn or cracked charging port.
- Plugged in, not charging. The battery, the charger’s wattage or the charging circuit.
- It runs on the charger but dies the moment it is unplugged. The battery has failed.
- The battery drops from 60% to off in minutes. A worn battery that can no longer hold its charge.
- The charger’s light goes out when you plug it into the laptop. A short in the port or on the board. Stop trying.

Laptop Not Charging: Quick Checks Before You Bring It In
Four things that cost nothing and rule out the simple causes.
- Try another wall socket, and plug in directly without an extension strip.
- Inspect the cable and plug. Look for kinks, fraying or a bent tip.
- Try another charger of the right wattage. The wattage is printed on the original adapter. A phone charger will not run most laptops.
- Check the battery’s health. On Windows, open Command Prompt, type powercfg /batteryreport and open the report it saves. Compare the full charge capacity with the design capacity.
What not to do: do not wedge or tape the plug to keep it charging. A loose port arcs and heats, and that turns a port repair into a board repair.
