- No power, or no charging light. The charger, the USB-C or MagSafe port, or a fault on the logic board that chip-level repair can often fix.
Three Things to Know Before a MacBook Repair
They change what is possible and what it costs.
- Storage and memory are soldered on recent models. On most MacBooks made since 2016, and all Apple silicon models, the SSD and RAM cannot be upgraded or pulled out. Buy the right size at the start, and keep a backup.
- Your files live on the logic board. Because the storage is soldered, a dead board can take the data with it. Repairing the board is often the only route back to the files. See our data recovery guide.
- Check AppleCare first. If the MacBook is still covered, start with Apple. A covered repair costs nothing, and opening the laptop elsewhere can complicate a later claim.

When to Stop Using It and Bring It In
Some MacBook faults get more expensive every day they are left.
- Anything was spilled on it. Switch it off, unplug it and do not turn it back on to check. Do not dry it with heat.
- The case is bulging or the trackpad is lifting. Stop charging it. A swollen battery is a fire risk and will crack the trackpad.
- The screen shows lines that are spreading. A damaged panel gets worse each time the lid is opened and closed.
- It gets very hot near the charging port. Unplug it and have the port checked.
