The offices around City Hall, from North Bridge Road to Raffles City, run on desktops that are switched on at nine and expected to work. A PC that powers up to a black screen is one of the most common faults we see, and one of the most often misdiagnosed. Our shop at Bugis Street #CFL A08 is one stop away on the East-West Line.
The good news is that a PC with power but no picture is usually a small fault: a part that has worked loose, a setting, or a cable. This page shows how to narrow it down and what it costs when it is something more.

Why a PC Powers On but Shows Nothing
Seven causes, listed from the cheapest to fix to the most expensive.
- The monitor is on the wrong input. It is waiting for a signal on a socket nothing is plugged into.
- The cable is in the wrong socket. When a PC has a graphics card, the sockets on the motherboard are usually switched off.
- A faulty cable. Display cables fail more often than people expect, especially ones that are bent sharply behind a desk.
- Memory that has worked loose. The most common hardware cause. The PC cannot finish its start-up check, so nothing reaches the screen.
- Scrambled firmware settings. A failed update or a flat motherboard battery can leave the PC unable to start until the settings are reset.
- A graphics card that is loose, unpowered or dead. Common after a PC has been moved.
- A failed monitor. The PC is fine and the screen is not.
How to Tell Which Part It Is
- No maker’s logo at all. The fault is in the hardware. Technicians call this a failed POST.
- The logo appears, then the screen goes black. The hardware is working. The fault is in Windows or a display driver.
- The PC beeps, or a small light stays on. The motherboard is naming the part it is stuck on.
- Another monitor works. Your screen or its cable has failed.
- The motherboard socket works but the graphics card does not. The card is the problem.
- The picture comes back after the memory is reseated. It was a poor contact, and it is fixed.
No Display: Checks to Try Before You Bring It In
Work down the list. The first three need no tools.
- Check the monitor’s input. Use the button on the screen to cycle through HDMI and DisplayPort.
- Swap the cable. Try a different cable, and a different socket if the PC has more than one.
- Move the cable to the graphics card. Its sockets are lower down on the back of the PC, in a horizontal row.
- Reseat the memory. With the PC unplugged, release each stick, push it back until both clips click, and try with one stick at a time.
- Listen and look. Count any beeps and note which small light on the motherboard stays lit. Tell us both.
What not to do: do not swap parts back and forth with another PC to test. Static and bent contacts create new faults, and a failing power supply can damage a borrowed part.

When a Black Screen Needs a Technician
Bring it in when the simple checks have not changed anything.
- A second monitor and cable make no difference. The fault is inside the PC.
- A light on the motherboard stays lit. It is stuck on the processor, the memory or the graphics card, and needs testing with known-good parts.
- The picture cuts out at random during use. Usually the graphics card or the power supply.
- It started after a move, a spill or a power trip. More than one part may be affected.
- The office needs it back today. Tell us when you drop it off, and we will say whether that is realistic.

The usual causes are a monitor on the wrong input, a cable in the wrong socket, memory that has worked loose, or a graphics card fault. If no maker’s logo appears at all, the fault is in the hardware.
Connect the monitor to another device, such as a laptop. If it shows a picture, the monitor and cable are fine and the fault is in the PC.
Yes. It is the most common hardware cause. A stick that is not fully seated, or one that has failed, stops the PC finishing its start-up check, so nothing is sent to the screen.
Usually not. If the maker’s logo appears, the hardware has passed its start-up check. A black screen after that normally points to Windows or a display driver.
A loose part or a settings fault can often be fixed the same day. Faults that need a replacement part usually take 1โ3 days.
Often, when the cause is a loose part, a setting or a driver. Tell us it is urgent when you drop the PC off and we will say whether same-day is realistic.
