SSD vs HDD in 2026: Which Should You Buy? (Singapore Guide)

⚡ Our verdict: In 2026, boot and run everything from an SSDa 512 GB NVMe for office and study, 1 TB NVMe for gaming. Keep a hard drive only for bulk archives. Upgrades from $39 + parts, cloned and done same-day at our Bugis shop.

Upgrading storage is the single biggest speed boost you can give an older PC — but should you get an SSD or stick with a cheaper hard drive? In 2026 the answer is clearer than ever. Here’s the practical guide.

The speed difference is not subtle

Drive type Read speed Windows boot Best for
Hard drive (HDD) ~150 MB/s ~90 seconds Bulk archives and backups only
SATA SSD ~550 MB/s ~20 seconds Reviving an older PC with no M.2 slot
NVMe SSD 3,000–7,000 MB/s Under 15 seconds Everything — office, gaming, creative

In real terms: apps open instantly, and game load screens shrink from a minute to seconds. It is the one upgrade people always describe as making the machine feel new.

Price in 2026: the old argument is dead

HDDs used to win on price. Not anymore — 512GB NVMe SSDs are now so affordable that for typical home, office and gaming use, there’s no reason to boot from a hard drive. The only remaining role for HDDs is bulk cold storage: movie libraries, backups, CCTV footage, where you need multiple terabytes cheaply.

Our recommendation by use case

Office / student PC: 512GB NVMe SSD. Done. Gaming: 1TB NVMe — modern games regularly exceed 100GB each. Content creation or AI work: 1TB+ NVMe for active projects, optionally an HDD for archives — like our Alienware workstation which pairs a 512GB SSD with a 2TB HDD. Every build in our office and gaming lineup ships with an SSD as standard.

Upgrading an existing PC?

Almost any desktop from the last decade can take a SATA SSD, and most from 2017 onwards have an M.2 slot for NVMe. Our upgrade service (from $39 + parts) installs the drive, clones your existing Windows and files so nothing is lost, and tests everything — usually same day at our Bugis shop.

Bottom line

Boot and run everything from an SSD; use an HDD only for large archives. If your PC still boots from a hard drive in 2026, an SSD upgrade will feel like buying a new computer for a fraction of the price.

FAQ

Is an SSD upgrade worth it on an old PC? It’s usually the best value upgrade you can make. A machine that takes 90 seconds to reach the desktop will do it in under 20 — for far less than a new PC costs.

Will I lose my files and have to reinstall Windows? No. We clone your existing drive, so Windows, programs and files all come across exactly as they were. You just get them back much faster.

SATA SSD or NVMe — does the difference show? Both feel dramatically faster than a hard drive; the jump from HDD to SATA is the big one. NVMe adds a further edge for large file transfers and game loading, and is what we fit by default where the motherboard supports it.

Do SSDs wear out? They have a finite write life, but normal home and office use rarely comes close within a drive’s practical lifespan. We SMART-check the health of every drive we sell — see our testing checklist.

Should I keep my old hard drive? Yes, if it’s healthy — leave it in as secondary storage for archives, photos and backups while Windows runs from the SSD.
