Common Gaming PC Faults
Most gaming PC problems come down to the graphics card, heat or power.
- Artifacts on screen. Coloured blocks, lines or flickering textures. If they also appear outside games, the graphics card itself is usually at fault.
- Crashes to desktop or a black screen mid-game. Often a driver problem, an overheating card or an unstable power supply.
- The PC switches off when a game loads. A sudden power-off under load points to the PSU or to heat, more often than to the card.
- Frame rate lower than the hardware should give. Thermal throttling, a bottleneck, or RAM running in single-channel mode.
- A loud or rattling graphics card fan. Worn fan bearings. The fans can be replaced without replacing the card.
- No display from the graphics card. A card that has worked loose, a missing power cable, or a dead card.
Signs Your Graphics Card Is Failing
- Artifacts show up on the desktop or during startup, and not only in one game.
- The display driver keeps crashing even after a clean driver reinstall.
- The card runs above 85ยฐC in games it used to handle comfortably.
- One or more of its fans no longer spin.
- The same crash happens in several different games.
- Another graphics card works fine in the same PC.
Gaming PC Crashing: Checks to Run First
Five checks that rule out the cheap causes first.
- Reinstall the graphics driver cleanly. Download the latest driver from the card maker and choose the clean installation option.
- Check the power cables. Every power socket on the card needs a cable, pushed in until it clicks.
- Plug the monitor into the graphics card. Using the motherboard’s display port instead means the card is doing nothing.
- Watch the temperature. A free monitoring tool shows the card’s temperature while you play. Note the highest number.
- Try a second game. If only one game crashes, the game is the problem. If they all do, the hardware is.
What not to do: do not try the old internet trick of baking a faulty graphics card in an oven. It damages the card and voids any chance of a proper repair.

Thinking of a new card instead of a repair? Compare options in our RTX GPU comparison. If the whole platform is old, a tested gaming PC is often better value than a new card in an old machine, and you can trade in the old one.
When a Gaming PC Needs the Workshop
Some symptoms get more expensive the longer the PC stays in use.
- Artifacts appear before Windows loads. That rules out drivers and points to the card’s hardware.
- The PC shuts off under load again and again. A failing power supply can damage other parts when it finally goes.
- You smell burning or see scorch marks on a power connector. Switch off at the wall.
- You have just bought a used card. We can stress-test it and check for ex-mining wear while you can still return it.
- A new card made things worse. The power supply or processor may not be up to it.
Why Siglap Gamers Bring Their PCs to Us
Gaming PCs are what we build, so they are what we fix best.
We build gaming PCs every day
The same people who assemble and test our gaming builds diagnose yours, so custom rigs and unusual part combinations are nothing new.
Stress-tested, not guessed
We load the graphics card, processor and power supply to reproduce the crash before recommending any part.
Fans replaced, not whole cards
A noisy or dead graphics card fan can usually be swapped on its own, which costs far less than a new card.
Upgrade advice you can check
Before fitting a new card we confirm your power supply and processor can support it, and say so if they cannot.

Artifacts or flickering that also appear outside games, driver crashes that keep returning after a clean driver install, and a card that runs very hot or loud are the usual signs. We stress-test the card to confirm before any repair.
Most graphics cards run between about 65 and 85ยฐC in games. Sustained temperatures above that, or a sudden rise compared with how the card used to run, usually mean dust, dried thermal paste or a failing fan.
A sudden power-off under load usually points to the power supply or to overheating, more often than to the graphics card itself. We test both.
Usually. Crashes under load are most often heat, a failing power supply or a GPU fault. We stress-test the PC to find which one before recommending any parts.
Often, yes. We check that your power supply can handle the new card and that your CPU will not hold it back, then install and test it.
