Signs It Is More Than a Glitch
- Blue screens come back after a restart, or show a different error code each time.
- Windows will not reach the desktop at all.
- The browser home page or search engine keeps changing back after you fix it.
- Security software has been switched off and will not turn back on.
- Files have been renamed with strange extensions and will not open.
- The problem returned after you reset or reinstalled Windows yourself.
Windows Trouble: Steps to Try First
Work through these in order. If one fixes it, you have saved a trip.
- Photograph the error. A blue screen shows a stop code. A photo of it tells us more than any description.
- Restart and let updates finish. Choose Restart, then leave the PC alone until it is back at the desktop.
- Undo the last change. If the trouble began after a new driver, program or update, uninstall it.
- Start in Safe Mode. If the PC behaves normally in Safe Mode, the cause is software and not hardware.
- Run a full scan. Use Windows Security to run a full scan, not the quick one.
- Back up while you can. If the PC still starts, copy your important files to an external drive before trying anything else.
What not to do: do not use the Remove everything option in Reset this PC until your files are backed up. It does exactly what it says.

A clean install puts a fresh copy of Windows 11 on the PC with current drivers and updates. Tell us which files matter before we start, and if the drive is readable we can copy them off first. If the PC is old enough to be on a hard drive, doing the reinstall onto a new SSD at the same time costs little more and makes a far bigger difference.
When Windows Problems Need a Technician
These are the cases where more attempts at home tend to make things worse.
- Blue screens with changing error codes. This pattern usually means failing memory or storage, which no reinstall will fix.
- Files that have been encrypted or renamed. Switch the PC off. This can be ransomware, and it keeps working while the PC is on.
- Windows will not start after a power cut. The system may be repairable without losing your files, but not if it is reset first.
- You reinstalled Windows and the problem came back. The cause is hardware.
- The PC cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. We can check whether a small hardware change would make it eligible.
